How to Understand the Mind The Foundation Program
with resident teacher kelsang lhachog
sundays 4.30pm - 8.30pm
Everyone is welcome to join Sunday Foundation Program (FP) as Kelsang Lhachog gives commentary to the essential Buddhist text How to Understand the Mind. This book offers us deep insight into our mind, and shows how an understanding of its nature and functions can be used practically in everyday experience to improve our lives.
On Sunday, Feb 19, there is an opportunity to try-out FP for free with a free trial class. The free trial class coincides with the start of the second half of the book How to Understand the Mind. This section of the book describes different types of mind in detail, revealing the depth and profundity of the Buddhist understanding of the mind. It concludes with a detailed explanation of meditation, showing how by controlling and transforming our mind we can attain a lasting state of joy, independent of external conditions.
If you are interested in trying out FP on the 19th please register your interest by e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Geshe Kelsang says: "Our present understanding and experience of Dharma is quite superficial. There is a big gap between our mind and Dharma and we cannot apply Dharma in our daily lives. Our approach remains passive, like someone watching television, and our mind remains as uncontrolled as before. Why is this? It is because we are not studying systematically, according to a specially designed programme. If we just pick at Dharma randomly we shall never gain deep and stable experience. For this reason the foundation program is very important."
Joining the Foundation Program involves enrolling for a section of a book and then attending all the classes, one of which is an end-of-term exam. Studying in this way gives our lives a meaningful structure and helps us to gain fuller experience of the teachings. You can join the program at any time.
Sundays 4.30pm - 8.30pm
Each class consists of preliminary prayers, guided meditation and a reading from the book with commentary and discussion.
Class Fee: $100 per month which also entitles you to attend all classes and courses at Mahasiddha Centre and its branches.
Based on Buddha’s teachings and the experiences of accomplished meditators, Understanding the Mind offers a deep insight into the nature and functions of the mind. The different types of mind are first described, revealing the depth and profundity of Buddhist understanding of human psychology and how this can be used to improve our lives. A practical guide is then given on developing and maintaining a light, positive mind – showing how to recognize and abandon harmful states of mind, and to replace them with peaceful and beneficial ones. The inspiring discovery we make from this is that we can attain a lasting state of joy, independent of external conditions.
